Why Is My Light Switch Buzzing?

Why Is My Light Switch Buzzing?

Any noise your light switch makes besides the “clicking” on and off are usually indicators that the switch is beginning to wear out or that it is defective.

If any of the light switches in your home or office are making a buzzing, crackling, or popping noise, it can be highly disconcerting. Those are supposed to be quiet, right? Any noise your light switch makes besides the “clicking” on and off are usually indicators that the switch is beginning to wear out or that it is defective. Call TriStar Electric today to replace any worn out or defective light switches in your home, office, or other commercial space!

Jumping Electricity

It sounds kind of scary, and it is, but when you hear a buzzing noise while flipping a switch, that means that the electrical charge is actually jumping between the metal parts inside the light switch. Under normal circumstances that charge should just flow through continuously from one piece to the other, telling the lights to turn on or off. With the electrical charge just floating around in there, it’s the perfect recipe for a fire. Any time you hear a buzzing switch, you need to get it taken care of immediately, and TriStar Electric is here to help!

Signs of a Malfunctioning Light Switch

If your light switch isn’t working the way it should, there will be indicators. Here are some things you should look out for:

Flickering lights– sometimes when a switch is malfunctioning or dying, it will cause the power to flicker and sputter.

Sparking– If your light switch is sparking, call us right away! A switch should NEVER do that!

Snap, Crackle, and Pop– As we mentioned before, any noise besides the subtle clicking when you turn the switch on an off is a sign of a problem. Snap, Crackle, and Pop need to stick to breakfast cereal!

More than a feeling– You use your light switches several times per day, every day. You know how they feel when turning on and off. If something just doesn’t feel right, it’s worth checking into.
