Common Generator Error Codes & Quick Fixes

Troubleshooting Generac Home Standby Generator Problems with TriStar Electric Inc.

Service Areas: Maryland, Washington DC, Northern Virginia

When your home standby generator displays an error code, it’s doing exactly what it was designed to do, protect itself. Modern Generac generators constantly monitor voltage, frequency, fuel supply, and engine operation. If something is unsafe or outside operating limits, the system shuts down and shows an alert.

This guide explains the most common generator error codes homeowners see, what they usually mean, and which fixes are safe to try before calling for service.

First, Always Start With These 3 Checks

Before focusing on the specific error:

  1. Confirm generator is in AUTO mode
  2. Look for an error message on the display
  3. Reset the controller:
    • Switch to OFF
    • Press ENTER twice
    • Return to AUTO

If the generator immediately faults again, the code matters.

1. Overload Error

Common Message: Overload / Underfrequency / Underspeed

What it means

Your home is demanding more power than the generator can safely produce. The generator shuts itself down to prevent engine damage.

This commonly happens when multiple heavy loads run at once:

  • Electric heat
  • AC systems
  • Electric water heaters
  • Dryers
  • Ovens
  • Hot tubs
  • Well pumps

Why it happens

Generators produce a fixed amperage (example: a 24kW generator = 100 amps).
If demand exceeds capacity, frequency drops and the generator shuts down.

Safe fixes homeowners can try

  1. Turn off large appliances inside the home
  2. Reset generator (OFF → ENTER twice → AUTO)
  3. Try starting again

Permanent solution

Have TriStar Electric Install Smart Management Modules (load shedding).
These automatically turn off non-essential circuits so the generator keeps running instead of shutting down.

2. Low Battery / No Crank

Common Message: Low Battery / Cranking Failure / Overcrank

What it means

The starter cannot spin the engine fast enough to start.

Most common causes

  • Old battery (most frequent issue)
  • Corroded terminals
  • Cold weather
  • Loose connections

Safe fixes

  1. Check display brightness (dim = weak battery)
  2. Inspect terminals for corrosion
  3. Jump start using a jump box (optional if comfortable)
  4. Reset controller and retry

If generator starts after a jump, then a battery replacement is required.

3. No Fuel / Fuel Pressure Fault

Common Message: Low Fuel Pressure / No Fuel / RPM Sense Loss

What it means

The engine is trying to start but fuel is not reaching the engine.

Natural gas systems, check:

  • Gas meter valve open
  • Utility gas outage in neighborhood

Propane systems, check:

  • Tank not empty
  • Tank valve open

Known quick fix (temporary)

Sometimes the fuel solenoid sticks. While the generator is cranking, lightly tapping the metal gas pipe entering the generator can free the plunger.

(Only attempt gently, otherwise wait for service.)

4. Generator Runs, But No Power to House

Common Message: No error, but house still dark

Most likely cause

Generator breaker is OFF or tripped.

Safe fix

Locate breaker on the side of the generator, or under the lid on the top right side and reset once.

If it trips again, stop and call service.

5. Utility Power Detected / No Start During Outage

Common Message: None, generator never attempts to start

Cause

Generator thinks power is still on.

Quick test

Look at your electric meter:

  • Numbers flashing on the display screen means utility power present
  • Blank screen means outage confirmed

If meter shows outage and generator does nothing, then it’s a transfer switch or control issue.

Depending on your Transfer Switch style, you can often use the detachable yellow handle, insert it into the slot, and manually transfer the switch yourself.

6. Exercise Fail / Service Due

Common Message: Maintenance Due / Exercise Failure

What it means

The generator ran its weekly self-test and detected a problem.

This does NOT mean the generator is broken, it means service is needed before the next outage.

Typical causes:

  • Dirty air filter
  • Old oil
  • Weak battery
  • Spark plug wear
  • Generator hit a certain threshold of hours that triggers this warning (if you are on a maintenance plan with us, you can ignore this message. This message can only be cleared once it comes on, so we may have been out to perform maintenance yesterday; however, there is no way for us to tell the generator that we just performed a maintenance. Now the generator just crossed over 100 hours, so the warning is on, even though you just had a maintenance. Again, if you have a maintenance contract with us, and you get this light, there is nothing to worry about.)

Regular maintenance prevents emergency failures.

When To Stop Troubleshooting

Call for professional service if:

  • Same error returns after reset
  • Generator will not crank
  • Breaker repeatedly trips
  • Fuel smell present
  • Generator shuts off under load
  • Red light stays on

Never open electrical panels or modify wiring.

Why Error Codes Are Actually Good

Modern standby generators are designed to fail safe, not fail running.

Without shutdown protection:

  • Engines would destroy themselves
  • Electrical damage could occur
  • Fire risk increases

An error code means the generator protected itself and your home.

Preventing Future Errors

Most emergency calls come from lack of maintenance.

Annual service prevents:

  • Battery failures
  • Fuel system sticking
  • Sensor faults
  • Load shutdowns

Generators that are monitored and serviced regularly are dramatically more reliable during storms.
