Where to Place Your Outdoor Security Lighting

Explore your many options for outdoor security lighting for your home and landscape.

When designing your residential security lighting system, it is critical that your lighting is placed in the most efficient places. The best locations for outdoor security lighting will highlight the critical areas of your home without overwhelming your property with light and disturbing yourself or your neighbors. The following locations are excellent areas in which to install lighting that will not only provide convenient light for your household but discourage any intruders from approaching your home.

Roadway Lighting

These outdoor lights will highlight areas where cars may be parked. This will include your driveway, any parking areas, and the streets. This can help eliminate the possibility of anyone lurking in the darkness, waiting for you to get out of your parked car, as well as discourage strangers or neighborhood intruders from parking near your home.

Motion Sensors and Floodlights

Floodlights are best for areas where you want to cover a large area without placing multiple lights in inconvenient locations. Many homeowners choose to link motion sensors with their floodlights, so if anyone were to, for example, enter your backyard and walk across your property, the lights would be activated and illuminate the intruder. Other places to use this outdoor security lighting are driveways, entryways, dark corners, decks or patios, and pool areas

Mounted Lights

Mounted lights can be placed near entrances or on perimeter fences or walls to illuminate these crucial areas of the home. Lights mounted on either side of front or back doors can brighten that space and discourage lurkers while providing you with illumination when unlocking your door. Lights mounted on your fence can illuminate your entire perimeter and eliminate any dark spaces in which intruders may attempt to enter.

Landscape Lighting

There are several outdoor security lighting options that can be placed throughout your landscape. These lights can be helpful not only for providing ample security but for illuminating your trees, shrubs, and flower beds, so no one in your household accidentally tramples them. You can also use these lights to illuminate the walkways on your property. These can be scenic, as well as useful for helping your family avoid wet grass or mud on the lawn.

Motion Sensor Recessed Lights

Dark, shadowy areas of your home can significantly benefit from outdoor security lighting. Pathways, doors, and backyards are all excellent places to install recessed lighting activated by motion. These lights are discrete and can fit in seamlessly with your home or landscape design without being obstructive. These lights are activated by any movement near them and will illuminate not only for you but also for any potential intruders attempting to access your home.
