The 3 Main Types of Residential Lighting

The 3 Main Types of Residential Lighting

There are three main types of lighting found in homes: ambient, task, and accent lighting.

You might be wondering how to make your home a brighter place this spring. Well, one option is to replace your windows to bring in more sunshine, but that might not always be the most affordable option. However, one thing you can do is to consider the types of residential lighting you already have in your house and upgrade them when the time comes. There’s no time like the present, so here are the different types that you can change and find the best way to light up your home while saving time, money, and electricity.

Ambient

Most of the time, you’ll be using ambient lighting wherever you go in your home. These lights also help you see when you’re relaxing in the backyard or working in the garden after dark, too. Some examples include ceiling lamps, wall fixtures, and chandeliers. Without enough lighting in the room, your eyes struggle to adjust and you will feel more tired than you really are. Being in a bad mood can make it hard to focus on what you’re doing and affect your relationships with everyone who lives with you, so bear that in mind.

Task

You might be familiar with task lighting if you spend large chunks of time working in the kitchen. Whether you are cutting vegetables for that night’s dinner or working on dishes after everybody has gone to bed, you’ll need adequate task lighting to make your job easier. Putting more lights in your bathroom can make it easier to shave or put on makeup; likewise, adding task lighting in your home office can make writing, reading, or paying the bills easier on the eyes as well.

Accent

Finally, let’s think about accent lighting in your home. Residential lighting isn’t complete without lights that are mainly there for decoration. By adding or improving these lights, you can help make individual rooms look better than they did before. Artwork, sculptures, and other decorations can benefit from accent lighting, especially if you have some priceless heirlooms stored in a glass cabinet and you want to make them easier to admire.
