How to Handle a Broken Ceiling Fan in Your Home

How to Handle a Broken Ceiling Fan in Your Home tristar electric

If your ceiling fan has broken, you’re in the right place.

Your home’s ceiling fan is one of the most useful features you probably take for granted. They keep air circulating, provide energy-efficient comfort in both the winter and summer, and add style to your living space. Much like any appliance, a ceiling fan could suddenly stop working, which leaves you wondering what went wrong. Before you rush to replace the fan or call in an expert, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue. At TriStar Electric, we help homeowners in Maryland keep their houses running smoothly. If your ceiling fan has stopped working, you’re in the right place. Read on to learn more!

Check the Power Source

It may sound simple, but sometimes the problem is as basic as the fan not getting enough power. Start off by checking:

  • Wall switch or light switch: if your fan is connected to a switch, check to see it hasn’t been turned off by mistake
  • Circuit breaker: A tripped breaker could cut power to the fan. Resetting it might restore the function.
  • Outlet power: Try plugging a separate device into the outlet to check if it is working.

If everything checks out and the fan still is not running, that means it’s time to move on to the next step or to call in the professionals from TriStar Electric.

Test the Pull Chain or Remote

A lot of modern ceiling fans come with remotes, while a few older styles rely on pull chains. If the remote isn’t working, then replace the batteries and re-sync the remote with the fan according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For any pull chains, tug on them gently to see if the fan changes speed or turns on. If the chain feels broken or stuck, it might need replacements or repairs.

Inspect the Fan Blades and Motor Housing

Sometimes, ceiling fans no longer work due to mechanical resistance. Dust buildup, loosened screws, and obstructions in the blades could prevent smooth movement. Check to make sure the blades aren’t hitting anything, the screws connecting the blades to the motor have been tightened, and there isn’t excessive wobbling, which could strain the motor. If the blades look okay but the motor housing feels very hot, that could indicate an internal electrical issue that requires professional assistance.
