Electric plug-in vehicles – like the Tesla, Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf, and Ford Focus – are steadily gaining popularity across the country. These automobiles represent a step in our country’s mission to reduce petroleum dependence and enhance environmental stewardship. Even with the recent decline in gas prices, electric vehicle (EV) sales are trending upward. 2014 (124,049 EVs sold in the U.S.) saw a 24% sales increase over the previous year (97,507), and 2015 looks to continue that trend. EV sales in America have topped the 10,000 mark in three of the last five months (March, May, and June).
“Electric vehicles are the wave of the future,” said Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler.
However, these vehicles require dedicated charging stations and there are simply not enough of these stations to support the growing EV industry. But that could soon change, especially with states, like Maryland, doing their part.
Maryland’s EV Charger Initiative
In 2014, the state of Maryland announced a new $1 million public-private grant program to build a statewide network of Level 3 fast-charge EV charging stations, stretching from Garrett County to Ocean City to Southern Maryland and beyond. These stations enable electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids to reach an 80% charge in less than 30 minutes.
“This initiative will enable current and future EV owners to use their cars more often, foster job growth in Maryland, keep Maryland money in Maryland and help achieve Maryland’s long-term air quality goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” said Gansler.
