It’s Never Too Early to Start Preparing Your Home for Fall!

The summer heat and humidity may still be here, but whether you believe it or not, fall is quickly approaching.

The summer heat and humidity may still be here, but whether you believe it or not, fall is quickly approaching. Fall can bring high winds and unpleasant weather that’s not good for your home’s electrical system. We’ve put together a brief guide to help you prepare your home for fall and cooler weather.

Check Out Your Breaker Box

Think of your home’s electrical system as a central nervous system. Your breaker box is the spinal cord. You can help mitigate a number of potential disasters by making sure this vital piece of equipment is in order.

Perhaps the simplest check you can perform is to make sure the fuses being used in the box are the correct size. An incorrectly-sized fuse can cause wires to overheat because of too much current flow. If this happens, your home will be in danger of a fire.

Make Sure Breaker Switches Work

Just like anything else with moving parts, your breaker switches need to be moved every once in a while to keep them from getting stiff. Simply switching them off and then back on again once a year will do the trick. A quick check every fall will help keep your breaker switches in good condition.

If you have a circuit interrupter, whether its ground fault (GCFI) or arc fault (AFCI), this should be tested once a month. The test is simple: press the test button and make sure the unit is still functional.

Install Outdoor Lighting

As it gets colder and daylight hours dwindle, spending time outside just doesn’t hold the same appeal that it did in the summer time. However, if you install decent outdoor lighting, you will be more likely to spend more time outside. Outdoor lighting also provides an added layer of security, as well as a nice-looking atmosphere. You spend a lot of time working on your landscaping all summer long, why not show it off with some outdoor lighting? You don’t need anything that’s glaringly bright, just enough so that you and your guests can see in the dark. Subtlety is key.
