Standby Generator Maintenance Serving Maryland, DC & Northern Virginia

TriStar Electric Inc. is a Generac Elite Dealer

Your backup generator is designed to protect your home or business during a power outage, but only if it starts. The number one reason a standby generator fails when needed is lack of maintenance. TriStar Electric provides professional generator maintenance and annual service throughout Maryland, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia to ensure your system is ready when the power goes out.

Many generators appear fine because they exercise weekly, but the short test run does not confirm the generator will operate under a real electrical load. Without routine maintenance, small problems develop into shutdown failures during storms.

Why Generator Maintenance Is Important

A standby generator is an engine, alternator, computer, and fuel system combined into one machine. Each part must operate correctly for the system to start and transfer power.
Without scheduled maintenance, common failures include:

  • Dead or weak battery
  • Clogged filters restricting air flow and oil flow
  • Worn or Burnt Spark Plugs
  • Corroded electrical connections on Battery Terminals
  • Valves out of adjustment lead to poor engine timing
  • Inaccurate Fuel Delivery because External Fuel Regulator needs adjustment
  • Low Oil due to leaks that aren’t noticed
  • Rotor Stator, radiator, fans, and filters getting clogged by debris or infestations because the unit wasn’t inspected and cleaned

These issues often do not appear until the generator attempts to carry the house load during an outage. That is why many homeowners discover problems only after losing power.

The Risk of Not Servicing Your Generator

A generator that is not maintained regularly has a much higher chance of failing during a storm.

Typical scenario:

  • The generator runs its weekly exercise cycle, or it fails to run its weekly cycle and you don’t notice that it has not been running for the past few weeks
  • A storm causes a real outage
  • The generator attempts to start under load
  • The system shuts down with a fault code

At that point, emergency repair demand is extremely high and service wait times increase. Preventative generator maintenance is the most reliable way to avoid emergency breakdowns. Additionally, ask TriStar Electric about a Cellular Mobile Link, this allows you and TriStar Electric to both monitor the generator remotely. TriStar Electric will check your generator daily for any error codes from the office when you are connected with a Cellular Mobile Link. That way, if you don’t notice your generator didn’t start on its last exercise, or it ends up with an error code, we will notice it as soon as it does. We will then give you a call to see if you would like us to come to repair it, that way we can get it fixed and ready for that storm that we don’t yet know is coming next week. With this solution, you didn’t have find out at the storm, we were able to find out the day the generator had the error occur.

Generac Generator Maintenance Specialists

As a Generac Elite Dealer, TriStar Electric technicians receive factory training and annual certification updates. We do not send trainee technicians to perform maintenance. Every technician is trained to identify early warning signs that prevent future breakdowns.

Proper maintenance protects:

  • Warranty coverage
  • Engine lifespan
  • Electrical reliability
  • Performance
  • Fuel system safety and stability

How Often Should a Generator Be Serviced?

Most standby generators require service every 6 to 12 months depending on runtime and environment. Systems exposed to heavy weather, heavy electrical load, or frequent outages benefit from more frequent inspections.

Ignoring service intervals significantly increases the chance of failure during the next outage.

There are some companies that only perform maintenance once per year, however we have seen a huge benefit and it is the manufacturers recommendation that we perform maintenance twice per year. Why? Because when a storm comes around, TriStar Electric rarely has any of its maintenance customers call in saying that there generator isn’t running. Our technicians are sitting at home waiting for a call that rarely ever comes. Our technicians have reported that this is a nice change from other companies they have worked at. And this is the difference at TriStar Electric. Our Technicians have stated that at other companies they either did one time a year maintenances on generators, or, they were given somewhere between 9 and 12 >maintenances to complete during a one day period, and that is just too many maintenances. No technician can spend quality time at a generator and do a really good job when they have that many visits to make in one day. Here at TriStar Electric, we manage to keep our Technicians schedules at a maximum of 5 maintenances per day so that they can spend the needed time at maintenances, reduce the chances for mistakes, and overall provide a better service to each and every one of our customers.

Benefits of Professional Generator Maintenance

Regular maintenance provides:

  • Higher startup reliability
  • Longer equipment life
  • Fewer emergency repairs
  • Lower repair costs over time
  • Priority scheduling eligibility
  • Peace of mind during storms

The cost of maintenance is small compared to the cost of emergency service or property damage, food loss, basement flooding, or a family member without power for their oxygen machine. Power outages can be damaging.

Maintenance Plans Available

TriStar Electric offers scheduled maintenance programs to keep your generator ready year-round. Customers enrolled in maintenance plans receive priority scheduling during high demand seasons and reduced risk of outage failure.

Generator maintenance / service near me in Maryland, DC and Northern Virginia. TriStar Electric, a Generac Elite Dealer, provides standby generator inspection, oil service, load testing and preventative maintenance to ensure reliable backup power during outages.

Recommended Generator Maintenance Frequency

While many manufacturers suggest annual service, TriStar Electric strongly recommends generator maintenance every six months. Through years of real-world service experience across Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia, we have observed a significant reliability difference.

Generators maintained twice per year consistently start and run properly during major storms and outages. Systems serviced only once per year tend to develop more issues, produce more fault codes, and are far more likely to fail when the power is actually out.

Regular six-month maintenance allows our technicians to catch battery degradation, fuel delivery problems, oil issues, and faults before they prevent the generator from operating under load. This preventative approach dramatically improves reliability when your backup power is needed most.
