What are the 3 Types of Home Lighting?

There are multiple lighting systems working together throughout your home to create a dynamic, comfortable, and functional atmosphere. The American Lighting Association lists the three types of home lighting as: ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting.

Keep reading to learn how these three lighting classifications work together to define your home’s look and feel.

Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting provides general illumination in the rooms of your home, and outside of your home as well. These are your ceiling lamps, wall fixtures, chandeliers, and other sources of bright light that gives an area its overall light. An inadequately-lit room will put strain on the eyes, and can even affect mood and energy, so it’s important to make sure your ambient lighting is done correctly.

Task Lighting

Task lighting is pretty straight-forward: it is any lighting that helps you perform a task. Lights around a mirror or vanity help you with self-grooming, just like an office table lamp helps you with reading, writing, or typing. Recessed lights, under-cabinet lights, and floor lamps can also be task lighting.

The goal with task lighting is a light that isn’t too bright, but gives enough illumination to comfortably perform the task at hand. Glare and shadows are another factor to take into consideration with task lights.

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is used as a part of a decorating scheme to highlight and accentuate room features. While they serve a purpose to illuminate objects such as artwork, their main purpose is aesthetics. They can be placed to spotlight pieces of art and decoration, or can also be purely for show—think of string lights, deck lighting, light-up sculptures, and colored spotlights or LEDs on the facades of buildings.

A combination and balance of the three types of home lighting above have a major impact on a room’s feel. Need help in finding the perfect balance of lighting in your home? Give TriStar Electric a call!
