The Smartest Electrical Safety Tips to Teach Your Kids

Electrical hazards can create fires, so you must ensure your kids are equipped with indoor and outdoor electrical safety tips.

Learning foundational information about electricity is important so you can protect yourself and others from possible electrical hazards. You could get shocked from many different sources, from electrical power lines to household appliances, and an electrical shock could cause lasting health problems or even death. Electrical hazards can create fires, so you must ensure your kids are equipped with indoor and outdoor electrical safety tips. The information in this blog is meant to provide parents and educators with insight on how to educate children on electricity and other tips for proper electrical safety. Read on to learn more!

Plugs and Outlets

Some tips to tell your kids about plugs and outlets include:

  • Do not stick your fingers, toys, or anything else in electrical sockets or outlets
  • Do not plug too many appliances into one outlet
  • Do not touch light bulbs in light or lamp features
  • Don’t let children unplug or plug something in without any permission or supervision
  • Repair outlets and plugs that are not working

Cords and Wires

Tips for handling cords and wires include:

  • Do not let children play with or chew on any electrical cords, whether they’re plugged in or left unplugged
  • When you’re unplugging a cord, unplug it at the very base of the plug, not by yanking out the cord
  • Do not touch or plug in any cords that are broken or have an exposed wire
  • Repair or replace exposed wires or cords that are broken

Electrical Appliances

  • If you’re cleaning an appliance, make sure to always unplug it first
  • Never stick your fingers, toys, or other objects into household appliances, even if your appliance is off or is not plugged in
  • Avoid using appliances if you are close to water or if you’re wet
  • Keep electric space heaters away from any items that are flammable like bedsheets, laundry, or curtains

Water

By and large, water and electricity don’t mix. Water is one of the main conductors, and when you touch water and electricity simultaneously, you will be shocked. Avoid things like:

  • Bringing or storing liquids around electronics to avoid possible spills
  • Avoid using appliances close to a sink, tub, shower, or any source of water
  • Keep electrical cords and plugs away from water sources
