Working on your own light switches is possible, but it is important to be safe.
Modern electricity is a convenience you likely do not think about often. You walk into your house, flip the light switch on, your lights turn on, and you continue with your day. When your light switch does not work properly, it could quickly turn a minor inconvenience into a serious problem. Working on your own light switches is possible, but it is important to be safe. Whenever you are working with electricity, there is a bit of a risk. A few risks are minimal, and the repair could be DIYed. Other repairs have more serious risks and should be completed by a professional electrician from TriStar Electric. Read on to learn more!
Check Out the Switch and Light Fixture
The first step for fixing the wiring in your switches or light fixtures is to inspect them. Make sure you check the plugs and the surrounding areas. If you notice anything unusual, like scorched or burned extensions or wall plates, it is a sign that something could be wrong with your electrical wiring. Make sure you check that the light bulbs are all installed properly and tightly.
Look at Your Circuit Breaker
The next step in fixing the wiring is to check the circuit breaker. To check on it, look to see which direction is “on.” Usually, one is on the right side of the switches. Your switches that are in use should all be turned on. The appliances that aren’t in use should be off. When a circuit is tripped, the switch will move off the on position, but it does not go to the off position either. Check to see if one of your circuit breaker switches has been tripped. If it has, then move the switch right back to the on position. Then, check to see if your light switches and fixtures are all working.
