3 Factors to Consider when Choosing Lighting for Your Home

3 Factors to Consider when Choosing Lighting for Your Home

There are many design choices that you make for your home, and many other, more utilitarian decisions to make as well. Lighting falls under both of those categories.

Your home’s lighting is one of those features that you just don’t notice unless it’s not working. Finding lighting solutions that work for you can be a bit daunting. Fortunately, we’ve assembled this handy guide to give you a starting point! If you want energy efficient, custom lighting solutions for your home, Call TriStar Electric today!

The Room

The first factor to consider is the room itself. Where is it in your home? How will it be used? A home theater would have relatively low lighting. An office, on the other hand, would most likely need to be brighter. You should also look at the amount of natural light in the space. If it gets a lot of natural light and is primarily used during daylight hours, then the lighting solutions will be pretty simple. There are also the rooms, such as the kitchen, that are always being used no matter the time of day. These are the rooms that will likely require the most planning because you want them to be just right for whatever you need to do.

Form vs. Function

There are many design choices that you make for your home, and many other, more utilitarian decisions to make as well. Lighting falls under both of those categories. You want your home’s lighting and fixtures to showcase your personality and design choices, but it also needs to be functional.

Brightness

Today’s LED lighting produces more light while using far less energy than older bulbs. Their brightness is measured in lumens. It is recommended that you estimate about 20 lumens per square foot for a floor, 30 for tables and raised surfaces (such as counters), and 50 to 75 per square foot for a desk or other type of workstation.
