The Smart Homeowner’s Guide to Preparing for Winter

The Smart Homeowner’s Guide to Preparing for Winter

Temperatures are dropping, and before we know it winter will be here.

Fall is really cooling things off here in Baltimore. Temperatures are dropping, and before we know it winter will be here. Some parts of the Northeast are already getting snow! With cold winter weather looming ever closer, you will want to prepare your home before frigid temperatures really settle in.

Keep Out the Cold

On those super cold winter days, it can be difficult to keep the frigid air out of your warm cozy home. Two things that will really help with that are making sure there are no places where the air can come in and ensuring your home is well-insulated. Check the weather stripping on all of your doors and windows and seal up any other gaps with caulk. Be sure to remove all window A/C units, as they will provide opportunities for frigid winter air to get in.

Show Your Furnace Some Love

One of the most inconvenient things to happen when the weather is getting cold is to turn on your furnace only to find out that it’s not working properly. Make sure your furnace will keep your home nice and toasty this winter by cleaning and inspecting it. Make any necessary repairs before it gets too cold. Cleaning the furnace will also help it be more energy efficient.

Light it Up

Since there is less and less daylight as the fall and winter months progress, proper lighting becomes even more important. We are all trying to be more energy efficient. Update your home’s lighting with new energy efficient lighting from TriStar Electric. Give us a call and we can help you find the perfect outdoor lighting solution for your home!

Reverse the Direction of Your Ceiling Fans

Many homeowners don’t realize that their home’s ceiling fans that keep them cool in the summer can actually help them keep warm in winter. All you have to do is change the direction of the blades’ rotation. Heat rises, so switching your fans so that they spin clockwise will push that warm air back down to you so that your HVAC system doesn’t have to work quite so hard.

Service Your Backup Generator

Finally, if you have a backup generator, you will want to make sure it is in tip-top shape. If you got your generator from TriStar Electric with a maintenance agreement, this is even easier! Whether your generator is from us or not, give us a call and we will be happy to come service it and make sure it is ready for the winter!
