A new smoke detector law went into effect this week, are your home’s smoke detectors compliant? The Maryland Smoke Alarm Law was passed back in 2013, and officially took effect on January 1, 2018. This new law requires homes with older, battery powered smoke alarms and those with no alarms to install newer devices that have sealed-in long-lasting batteries. These new devices also come equipped with a “hush” button so that the alarm doesn’t go off whenever you turn the oven up too high!
Smoke Alarms are Crucial for Fire Safety
So how do you know if your alarm needs to be replaced? Well, most units have a manufacture date on the back. If it is older than 10 years old, it needs replacing. If you cannot find a date, it is likely that the smoke detector is older than 10 years and you should replace it.
